Players choose a gymnast to work with, pick her outfit and head for the practice room, where they pick moves to try out, then create their routine by choosing an order to execute them in. Details: In this game, one of numerous Barbie spinoffs to show up on CD-ROM over the past few years, Barbie and her flexible friends Christie, Theresa and Coach Kira prepare for a gymnastics competition. This action game uses the traditional third-person perspective to follow the plot of the film, offering gamers a choice of playing as Brendan Fraser's Rick O'Connell or as Imhotep the Mummy. The first such release had the excuse of running on the aging PlayStation platform for its shoddy graphics and uninspired gameplay, but The Mummy Returns has no such absolution on PlayStation 2. In that light, a game tie-in seems tragically inevitable.

Details: The biggest problem with the two Mummy movie remakes was their emphasis on special effects over substance - in other words, they looked like video games. And although Throne's game engine is solid, many of its levels get painfully repetitive, with inadequate rewards for putting up with the drudgery before. Since each samurai comes with his own statistics and inventory of personal items - not all of which are usable by other samurai - you often find yourself stopping what you're doing just to make sure your warriors are still properly outfitted. The problem here is that having all these characters around leads to a tedious degree of micromanagement.

If you run into trouble, you can even resurrect a slain samurai with a tap of the mouse button. For instance, the Brick is your heavy-weapons guy who can clear out a roomful of enemies, while the Wizard is more of a finesse character who casts his spells from afar. With your four men in play (who in turn represent seven character classes), the name of the game becomes picking which one to use at any given time. Throne's advantage lies in its complex character dynamics: It lets you control four characters at once, employing a creative interface that allows switching between your warriors with a button click or hot key. (Perhaps unsurprisingly, the two founders of developer Click Entertainment earlier worked on Diablo.) Delving deeper into Throne, however, reveals both this game's distinct identity and its peculiar flaws. Details: Throne of Darkness looks at first like a Diablo clone with much better graphics - it offers the isometric view and mouse-driven hack-and-slash interface popularized by Blizzard's role-playing game.
